Huaraz is conveniently located in the most important hiking and climbing area in Peru, in the valley of Callejón de Huaylas at the foot of the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. Set at an altitude of over 3000m above sea level, the city is surrounded by snow-covered mountains and icy blue lakes - a setting which has earned it the nickname the !Switzerland of Peru." Much of the town was destroyed in several devastating earthquakes over the years, but what it lacks in colonial charm it makes up for in the beauty of its surroundings.

Huaraz is well set up for outdoor tourism and there are many hiking shops, guide services and information offices around town, as well as a wide choice of hotels. This is the ideal base from which to start hikes into the spectacular mountains and valleys of the region.

Pastoruri Glacier – This beautiful glacier can be found in Huascarán National Park. It is popular amongst skiers, snowboarders and hikers, and is also considered an excellent challenge for ice climbing enthusiasts.

Chavin de Huantar Temples - Home to two ancient temples, the older of the two contains several mysterious underground chambers believed by some to have been used for human sacrifices.

Bistro de los Andes
A stylish bistro with a European air, Los Andes is owned by a multilingual Frenchman and offers an interesting mix of French and Peruvian dishes ranging from pancakes to pastas. With good coffees, delectable desserts and fabulous fish dishes, there's something here for everyone at any time of day. We recommend the Trucha a la Amendra (trout baked with almonds).

Siam de los Andes
This Asian emporium is one of the more high-end restaurants in Huaraz, and the light, delicate, and at times extremely spicy food, is the real deal. The menu is authentic and very well prepared by a Thai chef. The Pollo a la Brasa is especially delicious. Vegetarians will also find plenty to choose from. Open evenings only.

Specializing in authentic thin-crust pizzas and excellent pastas this restaurant also serves good steaks, salads, seafood and top-notch espresso. We recommend the chef´s special Plato del Diablo (sirloin flambéed with whiskey). With polished and friendly service this is one of the more upscale restaurants in Huaraz, but the atmosphere is nonetheless relaxed and friendly. Open daily 5.00pm -11.00pm.
